Villagers rally again to battle wind farm

Villagers rally again to battle wind farm

0 Comments | Northern Echo, Jul 29, 2010 | by Chris Fay

RESIDENTS are preparing to once again fight to preserve their landscape after developers lodged plans for a three turbine wind farm.

Sedgefield Village Residents’ Forum is opposing Wind Prospect’s plans for the 2Mw 110m-high turbines on agricultural land near Spring Lane.

The forum says the village will face major disruption during construction and operation, but Wind Prospect says the turbines will help meet the Government’s renewable energy targets.

Julia Bowles, chairwoman of the forum, said: “My major concern is that, once again, our community is presented with a controversial planning application with the potential for great disruption to our community at the time of year when many are on holiday and local groups and our town council does not meet.

“It is essential that our community is made aware of all the implications of this application.”

She added: “It’s very worrying that we have to keep having these ongoing fights to protect our community way of life.”

In recent years, the forum has fought several wind farm applications, a secure mental health hospital and a caravan park.

Theakston Estates’ caravan park was refused planning permission by the former Sedgefield Borough Council, but the park was endorsed by an appeal.

The forum backed plans for a motorsports track, which recently failed to win approval during a public inquiry.

Wind Prospect says the turbine bases will be hidden underground, meaning the land can be farmed up to the columns, and that the development is entirely reversible at the end of its useful life.

The firm says the proposed site can accommodate the wind turbines with a 750m buffer from the nearest residential properties and adds that the land is of no significant conservation value.

It states in its planning statement: “Planning policy promotes renewable energy development where the benefits of the proposal outweigh any identified harm that may result from the development.”

Comments on the wind farm should be submitted to Durham County Council by August 12, but the forum is seeking an extension to the consultation period.

A forum meeting will be held at 7pm on Monday, in the parish hall, to discuss the application further.

The plasma screen

The plasma screen is capable of displaying more than 16 million different colors, as well as more realistic colors and more subtle gradations within colors.

Plasma displays also provide a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9, providing the best aspect ratio for widescreen DVD movies and for HDTV programming. This wide aspect ratio more closely matches the format of large screen movies, providing for a more enjoyable and realistic viewing experience.

Those viewers who are familiar with the limitations of the rear projection big screen TV will want to know that plasma TVs provide a much more uniform brightness, without the ?hot spots? frequently seen in the middle of the screen on rear projection TVs. The plasma display is also free of the corner dark spots that plague rear projection televisions.

And then of course there is the size and slenderness of the plasma TV. It is this thinness that attracts so many buyers, and in fact many plasma televisions are lightweight and thin enough to hang on a wall, as well as thin enough to fit virtually anywhere. This contrast is particularly obvious when one compares a new plasma screen TV to the old rear projection big screen TVs, which could fill an entire room and were very bulky to move from place to place.

There is no doubt that plasma TV technology has a great many benefits over both traditional CRT televisions and rear projection models.

Phew what a scorcher! Singer goes from rags to rap in Pounds 1

Phew what a scorcher! Singer goes from rags to rap in Pounds 1

P DIDDY worked in the music industry for seven years before launching his own clothing line Sean John, and Jay-Z was already famous when he set up Rocawear.

But an up-andcoming London rapper has gone about things the opposite way around to his US contemporaries. Tayo Jarrett, who goes by the stage name of Scorcher, already has his own clothing and video production companies despite the fact that he is yet to release his first single.

Fame now beckons for the 24-yearold entrepreneur from Enfield after he signed a Pounds 1 million deal with record giant Geffen.

Scorcher managed to garner an impressive fanbase for an unsigned act, with his self-produced videos on YouTube attracting more than two million views.

He said: “When I was making my first music video, I was deciding what I was going to wear. But I didn’t want to wear anyone else, and I thought, ‘Stuff it, I’m going to make my own’. I started designing pieces and I haven’t stopped.”

Scorcher sells his designs under the name Skywalker, another of his aliases which was his nickname as a child.

His production company, Staple House, has worked with fellow artists Chipmunk, Wiley and Bashy and came about in similar circumstances.

The rapper added: “I hired a director for my first video and I didn’t really like what was going on.

“I ended up directing it. I did a lot of research and reading, put my money where my mouth was and just did it.

“That’s how the production company came about

Diners are really spoilt for choice with three restaurants

Diners are really spoilt for choice with three restaurants

SIT in the Blue Room for long enough and you might be tempted to look around for the nearest bell to ring for your valet. Housed in one of Thoresby Hall’s high-ceilinged staterooms, the restaurant looks out over the park grounds.

Beyond manicured hedges is the Thoresby Hall cricket pitch, and beyond that the little lake.

Just off the Blue Room you’ll find the library, all wood- panelling and brown leather, with books spanning more than a century and a huge globe that looks as if it should direct you to places such as Ceylon.

Beyond that sits the small bar and a room where portraits of Pierreponts look down on you as you indulge in a game of billiards.

This is high living of a bygone age. If Bertie Wooster came running past looking for a cow creamer, he wouldn’t look out of place.

But you don’t have to know the right people – or have a harebrained scheme from which your valet will have to extricate you – to get a Blue Room invite these days.

This north Notts treasure, just up the road from Ollerton and now a Warner Leisure resort hotel, is also home to three unique restaurants.

One, that gloriously resplendent Blue Room, does high-end British food in opulent surroundings.

Down the stairs, Fenocchi’s serves up Italian cuisine in the stately home’s atmospheric old wine cellar with vaulted ceiling.

And around the corner, Pierreponts offers straightforward fare under a modern-addition glass ceiling.

Executive head chef Andrew Soddy overseas all three restaurants. He’s been at Thoresby for just two months and he’s getting used to tea and scones one minute, tiramisu the next.

“It’s an interesting job. It’s quite challenging,” he says. “I’m impressed by the diversity of all the restaurants.”

Andrew’s previous work includes a stint with celeb chef Gary Rhodes.

He knows about AA rosettes, and for that matter, Michelin stars, and one of his goals for Thoresby is to build on the high-end restaurant’s already excellent reputation.

“The Blue Room is our fine dining restaurant and it’s a fabulous restaurant,” he says.

It now boasts two rosettes, he notes, and he wants to push towards three.

On a typical day, Andrew does plenty of walking between the various kitchens. At midday he often drops in on Fenocchi’s, where the fresh Italian bread is made on site.

In the mid-afternoon, he tries to check in on a favourite Blue Room tradition – high tea.

Pierreponts, meanwhile, is busy all day as it also serves as the resort’s breakfast area.

Those different culinary experiences in such a small area make up one of Thoresby’s great advantages, Andrew reckons.

“It’s great to sample all the different kinds of cuisine you can have,” he says. “On a weekend away, you usually can’t do that.”

It’s also great to be able to stroll in the woods and across the fields that much of the food recently called home.

Warner Leisure runs the resort in agreement with the Pierrepont family, which keeps control of the estate and maintains farming on the grounds

DPP dropped over Saiful link

DPP dropped over Saiful link

0 Comments | New Straits Times, Jul 28, 2010 | by Farrah Naz Karim

PUTRAJAYA: A member from the prosecution team in the Anwar Ibrahim sodomy trial was dropped after allegations that she was romantically linked to main complainant, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail yesterday told reporters that junior deputy public prosecutor Farah Azlina Latif was dropped from the prosecution team and also removed from the Chambers’ Prosecution Division.

This, Gani said, was to prevent negative public perception against the prosecution team in the sodomy trial.

The allegation was highlighted in a news portal last week.

Gani said as soon as the report was published in the news portal, the head of the prosecution team, Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden, immediately dropped Farah Azlina.

“In a meeting with senior officers from this division two days ago, we decided to remove her from the Prosecution Division as there were concerns that this could affect the credibility of the division,” Gani said.

Yusof, Prosecution Division chief Datuk Tun Abd Majid Tun Hamzah and another member of the prosecution team, Datuk Nordin Hassan, were also present.

On Monday, Anwar’s lawyers demanded that Gani respond to the allegation.

Counsel Sankara Nair told reporters that if the matter was not addressed, it could affect the ongoing trial which is set to resume on Aug 2.

Anwar is being prosecuted by an eight-man prosecution team comprising Yusof, Nordin, Mohamed Hanafiah Zakaria, Wong Chiang Kiat, Noorin Badaruddin, Mira Mirna Musa, Naidatul Athirah Azmad and Farah Azlina.

To date, Saiful and Farah Azlina have not commented on the allegation.

Gani said Farah Azlina, who had served the chambers for six years, joined the prosecution team on Jan 20 following the retirement of DPP Shamsul Sulaiman.

“Farah Azlina’s duty was to take notes of statements made in court. This included taking down questions and answers of the prosecution, the defence and witnesses.

“She was not directly involved in the hearing or had access to any documents, including investigation papers relating to the case,” said Gani, adding that she shared the duty with DPPs Mira Mirna and Naidatul Athirah.

“The two other junior DPPs will now take over her duty.”

Gani said his office always offered opportunities to young officers to be involved in high-profile cases, although their roles were limited to taking down notes.

Asked if Farah Azlina had been reprimanded by the Chambers for having a relationship with Saiful, Gani said an internal investigation would be carried out.

Anwar, the PKR de facto leader, is charged with sodomising Saiful at Unit 11-5-1 of the Desa Damansara Condominium in Jalan Setiakasih, Bukit Damansara between 3.01pm and 4.30pm on June 26, 2008.
